ALSO : Sutskever's New AI Safety Venture

Hi Synapticians!
OpenAI is having babies… Indeed, former CTO Mira Murati has just announced the creation of Thinking Machines Lab, aiming to bridge the gap between AI and public understanding—excited to learn more! Another "baby" from OpenAI, and this time, it's none other than OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, who plans to develop Safe Superintelligence… The name says it all. But who remains at OpenAI? 😉 Mira, Schulman, Brockman, Amodei, Sutskever, Radford are already gone.
Finally, we're unveiling the story behind our name, Synaptiks—and why China might be taking inspiration from us… just kidding 😉
And a little bonus to wrap up—for the Valentine’s Day procrastinators who need (or want) to make it up to their partner.
Top AI news
1. Mira Murati Launches Thinking Machines Lab for Collaborative AI
Mira Murati, former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, has founded Thinking Machines Lab, a public benefit corporation dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence. The company aims to bridge the gap between rapid AI advancements and public understanding by developing accessible and customizable AI systems. Emphasizing transparency, the lab plans to share technical notes, research papers, and open-source code. The team includes notable figures such as John Schulman and Barret Zoph, focusing on creating multimodal AI models that enhance human-AI collaboration across various applications.
2. Ilya Sutskever’s AI startup secures $1B funding at $30B valuation
In June 2024, Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, established Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) alongside Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. SSI is dedicated to developing superintelligent AI systems with a primary focus on safety and alignment with human values. By September 2024, the company secured $1 billion in funding from prominent venture capital firms, including Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital, valuing SSI at $5 billion. Operating with a lean team of 10 employees based in Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv, Israel, SSI aims to advance AI responsibly amidst growing industry concerns about AI safety.
3. AI is shaping brand perception
AI is becoming a key player in shaping brand perception and consumer recommendations. Companies must now analyze how AI models interpret their brand and adjust their messaging accordingly. Tools like Share of Model help businesses optimize their AI presence, much like SEO for search engines. However, biases in AI models pose challenges, often favoring global brands over local ones. As AI-driven decision-making grows, brands must learn to appeal not just to human consumers but also to AI systems that influence purchasing decisions.
Bonus. Integrated Synaptic Array Revolutionizes Vision
A team from the Beijing Institute of Technology has unveiled a 0.7 × 0.7 cm² synaptic device array that integrates sensing, memory, and processing functions to enhance artificial vision systems. Utilizing a monolayer of molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) and gold nanoparticles for improved electron capture, the array can write and erase images, achieving a 96.5% accuracy in digit recognition. This development addresses challenges in current artificial vision systems, such as circuit complexity and high power consumption, by enabling efficient parallel processing of visual information, paving the way for practical applications in integrated neuromorphic systems.
Meme of the Day
For those, men and women, who are late with Valentine’s day ;)
Explanation (for those who trouble to understand maths or meme…): this means that my love for you is not just a single moment but something that accumulates and grows over time. Just like an integral measures the area under a curve, my love keeps increasing day by day, and the difference between yesterday and today is just a reflection of this continuous growth ☺️
