Apple Intelligence Upgrades To GPT-5

ALSO : Meta Buys AI Voice Startup WaveForms

Hi Synapticians!

After yesterday’s big day with the announcement of GPT-5 (we’re still testing it, but so far we’re fans of the API pricing), Apple is throwing another coin into the AI machine… and it’s called GPT-5.
In its next software update, Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT integration will shift from GPT-4o to GPT-5, with a rollout expected as early as next month on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
In other words, Siri, Apple’s Writing Tools, and “Visual Intelligence” will get a boost; provided the user enables the ChatGPT option. Fingers crossed that this finally becomes… useful 😉

It’s a realpolitik gamble. Apple is buying time and perceived quality by plugging in GPT-5, while it strengthens its own models and opens its platform further to developers.
Strategically, it’s smart: immediate superior experience, reduced churn risk; but it’s also an explicit dependence on a third-party provider for a critical part of the experience.
Cost (cloud, partnerships), latency, and consent clarity will be the KPIs to watch. And let’s remember: GPT-5 was only just made official by OpenAI, boasting claimed improvements in robustness, speed, and reduced “hallucinations.”

“Think Different” has become “Think Partner”; and for once, it’s probably the right call.
In short, Apple isn’t “outsourcing” AI; it’s orchestrating it.
The question is no longer if but how this Apple-OpenAI duo will redefine UX; and how far Apple can take back the reins tomorrow without losing today’s magic.

Top AI news

1. Apple Will Upgrade ChatGPT In Apple Intelligence To GPT-5 In Next Software Update
Apple is planning a significant upgrade for its Apple Intelligence feature, intending to transition the ChatGPT integration to the more advanced GPT-5 model. This enhancement is slated for implementation in the forthcoming software updates for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. The primary goal of this upgrade is to substantially improve the user experience by equipping the devices with more sophisticated AI capabilities. Reports suggest that Apple will integrate this cutting-edge technology without incurring direct payment costs to OpenAI, a strategic move that could optimize resource allocation while delivering premium AI performance. The adoption of GPT-5 is expected to result in more nuanced understanding of user queries, more natural conversational flows, and a generally more intelligent and responsive digital assistant experience across Apple's product ecosystem. This development underscores Apple's commitment to advancing its AI offerings and staying competitive in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence market. Read online 🕶️

2. Meta Acquires AI Voice Startup WaveForms to Bolster Superintelligence Labs Capabilities
Meta has acquired the AI voice startup WaveForms for an undisclosed amount, a move aimed at strengthening its Superintelligence Labs. This acquisition follows Meta's recent purchase of PlayAI and highlights a significant investment in the AI audio sector. WaveForms, a relatively new company founded just eight months ago, had already secured $40 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz, indicating strong investor confidence in its technology. The startup's core mission was to "solve the Speech Turing Test," which involves making AI-generated speech indistinguishable from human speech. Additionally, WaveForms was developing "Emotional General Intelligence," focusing on AI's understanding of self-awareness and management. The acquisition includes the reported joining of two key co-founders, Alexis Conneau (formerly of Meta and OpenAI, instrumental in GPT-4o's voice mode) and Coralie Lemaitre (ex-Google), to Meta, underscoring the talent and expertise Meta is bringing in to advance its AI audio capabilities. 3. Machine Learning Predicts Earthquake Foundation Depth
Researchers have investigated the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms, including Random Forest (RF), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM), to predict bearing layer depth. This depth is critical for foundation design and assessing risks like soil liquefaction, especially in earthquake-prone areas. Traditional methods like the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) are accurate but costly and time-consuming. The study, using data from Tokyo, found that RF significantly outperformed ANN and SVM in prediction accuracy and robustness. Including stratigraphic information further improved model performance. The findings suggest that ML, particularly RF, provides a more efficient and cost-effective alternative for geotechnical engineering and urban planning, enhancing safety and resilience in seismically active regions.
